Ooooooo

Niiiice
Look at those open cockpits on those TBD's! They were surely flying pretty darn slow.

One of the TBD pilots who survived at Midway did so because he was told "The TBD is not very fast but it flies slow better than any other airplane around." So that pilot did not fly as fast as possible on the way back from striking the IJN fleet, crabbing and generally making as poor a target as possible, no doubt with his rear gunner doing all he could as well. A Zero followed them almost the whole way and never was able to line them up for a shot.

Are you sure about the wing floats?
PBM-1s were supposed to have retracting floats.

Going by the author of the publication. Could be an error on his part. Anything is possible.
Original PBM: The original PBM was a seaplane with no landing gear.
PBM-5: The PBM-5 was not an amphibious aircraft and did not have retractable landing gear.
PBM-5A: The PBM-5A was an amphibious aircraft with retractable landing gear. The Navy ordered 36 PBM-5A models to address the PBM's lack of landing gear. The PBM-5A was used in the Coast Guard as the PBM-5G.
