I remember this picture (or one very similar to it) being posted somewhere around here a few years ago (might've been this thread?). That time, the person posting it knew one or all of the people in the picture.
Seems like it was a rather poignant post and really gave one a feel for the time and why the plane was there.
Anyway, nice to see the ol' girl again.
 
AFAIR (don't have the proof or source now) the giant crosses were to help finding and rescuing emergency-landed airplanes in the water.
The above a/c K6+KL is a D-2 from 1./Kü.Fl.Gr.306. ((Kü.Fl.Gr. = Küstenfliegergruppe), later renumbered Kü.Fl.Gr.406
I'm sure that's true ..... but I still prefer the Moon Nazi story.......
