It looks like spark retarder screens on the stubs.

No - those are a very common exhaust on Kestrel engines.

In 1972 I attended an international aviation museums conference hosted by the San Diego Aerospace Museum.

These photos are of Frank Tallman in front of the replica Spirit of St Louis that he built and flew for the movie which was one of the display aircraft.
