111FS P-51 Mustangs over the USS Texas circa 1948 REDD

The P-51Ds are 111th Fighter Squadron, in 1947, celebrating the arrival of the USS TEXAS to Galveston Bay. The TEXAS had been decomissioned, and it's propellers were removed.
The tugs were used to move the ship from the east coast repair yard to TEXAS. It is about to go into a slip dug at the San Jacento Battle Ground for display.
The P-51s are in the first National Guard markings, The TO required the national insignia on the wings, but did not mention the fuslage star. At the 1948 summer camp, (the first for many Units) visiting Air Force generals had a cow, and the fusalage stair was added before the 1949 annual camp.

October 1942. The aircraft, captained by Flying Officer David Sleep, was crippled by one of its own depth charges during
an attack on a U-boat southwest of Ireland. One of six depth charges released exploded on contact with the submarine's
casing, the blast ripping into the Liberator's tail. Sleep and his crew battled with the badly damaged flight controls for the
rest of the trip back to base but lost control on the final approach.

It is confirmed that F/O Sleep's aircraft sank U-216. Thankfully all crew members escaped with relatively minor injuries.
The worst injury sustained was Sgt Rose with his broken leg.
