458th Bomb Group B-24s run up their engines before a mission, 24 December 1944. The mission that day was the largest mounted by the 8th AF with 2046 bombers dispatched with 1884 dropping on target.

The B24's of the 2nd Air Division contributed 634 of that total. Targets were airfields and lines of communication centers (towns and cities with roads) throughout western Germany.

This was in support of the Allied armies involved in countering the Nazi's Ardennes offensive.

I have a different text to the above photograph - those are obviously more than 4 prototypes + a Ki.61. Here it is:

Upper photo:
In October 1941, immediately before the outbreak of the Pacific War, six Ki-44 additional prototype aircraft lined up at Kagamigahara Airfield in Gifu Prefecture for service trials. At the same time, the Kawasaki Ki-61 prototype No. 2 was also undergoing evaluation.
These are the Ki-44 additional prototypes Nos. 4 through 9. Each aircraft has one to three colored bands—red, yellow, blue, etc.—painted around the fuselage to allow identification.

This photograph was taken at a slightly different time from the upper photograph and shows Ki-44 additional prototype aircraft. On the left is No. 9 aircraft. From the right, the 3rd, 5th, and 6th aircraft are finished in overall gray-green paint, while the 1st, 2nd, and 4th aircraft are left unpainted.
It appears that test aircraft Nos. 1 through 3 are also included here. These aircraft were hurriedly organized so that they could advance south almost immediately at the start of the war.
