WOW! I had never considered that a crew member would have to climb onto the upper wing with the engine running to hook up the cable to crane it back onboard. So did they climb the forward engine strut to get up top? With the prop spinning and the plane riding on the waves. Not for me!

Great question. I can only find one step so it appears to have been more hoist yourself up from just above the deck. I checked the lube diagram and that did not list any steps so I can safely say there was one step. That appears to be the total. I will see if I can find more.

I agree, I am still trying to figure out if the lifting bridle is permanently attached to the upper wing, or if you had to attach the 2 bridle ends the lift points inch's in front of the spinning propeller. Shiver!

There are four cables and ends and from what the manual insinuates they are not permanently fitted. They are definitely stowed in the wing CC. However the IWM photo
OIP-1982188545.jpg below suggests that they were permanently fitted. It seems likely they were fitted when operating from ships but not fitted otherwise.

This was when the Saratoga was the only operational US carrier in the Pacific. The RN loaned a carrier for ops until the Enterprise was repaired.
