Anyone know what that contraption on the tail was being tested for?

As I've found the Widcat was used for investigating aerodynamic characteristics, specifically focusing on ground-loop tendencies caused by wing stalling. The flight and wind tunnel investigations primarily analyzed stability characteristics, engine cooling configurations, and tail-wheel modifications.

I was just reading about that action in "Dust Clouds Over The Middle East" which is way more detailed in day-to-day, plane-to-plane, pilot-to-pilot narratives than I would have thought possible.

Yep ... actually the Grumman G-36A type ordered by the French Navy in 1939 initially. After the fall of France in 1940, these aircraft were taken over by Great Britain where they served in the FAA under the name Martlet Mk.I.
