Ryan XL-17D 51-16427 was diverted from a Navy contract on 1 November 1951 for assignment to Air Research & Development Command at Wright Patterson AFB. Winterized with modification of engine baffling and with heating provisions installed, it was despatched to Canada on Project SOIAS (sliding on ice and snow). There it operated alongside other aircraft (YC-125; C-47) to measure the effectiveness of skis on these surfaces. (XL-17Ds 51-16425 and 426 were also assigned to Wright Patterson during this period, presumably also for Project SOIAS, and assumed numbered 1 and 2)

Reassigned to ARDC at Holloman in December 1953, it was authorized for salvage in June the following year.
