Last time I went up there abouts I left DFW area heading up north. It was sunny. By the time I got up there it was snowing and sleeting and raining, all at the same time! Frist time I ever went up there was snowing on the ground and it was covered in six inches of dusty dirt, I thought Pugpin from Charley Brown had rolled through. That being said the only F-101C I know left on display is on a pedestal outside a barracks and I had to see it. Not an RF-101C but a F-101C.Born and lived in North Tejas, I know that prairie.

That Thud was a Thunderstick mod with the enlarged spine for avionics. Texas ANG was the only units to operate them. WF I had an aunt who lived just outside the base perimeter. Went up in the winter of '82, first time I went up. Folks lived in Ranger and I was home on leave from Andersen AFB Guam. Winter of '82 I got of the plane at DFW and it was like 20°. I told the to get back on the plane we were going to Guam where it was 87°. Anyway Wichita Falls has always (like Cannon AFB, Clovis NM) been a dusty dirty dust bowl town when ever I've been around it.You gotta love the "wintry mix". I've got family from Tyler through D/FW, WF and up into Amarillo. We get five different weather reports on the family net, most days.
I really love the -101. It's a little weird-looking, but in its own way pretty. We only had a Thud on static display at Carswell, the thing looks like a pregnant cow.

Don't I know it. My uncle Sal was stationed at Clovis Army AFB during WWII. Later it was named Cannon but the drive from here to Clovis is mind numbing at best. Ain't no better way to hit I-40 to Amarillo.My Uncle Bob -- no kidding, you Brits! -- did a stretch up there at Cannon. We'd drive from El Paso to Clovis to Amarillo when we lived out west. God, that was a dreary drive.
I always felt sorry for the poor groundcrew who had to put them on and take them off. You dare not let anything slip.I have. I always found the above-wing stores weird and creative both. I love the plane itself and it has an interesting story.
