I can't believe someone actually got one of these things running. I have never seen anything that looked so unlikely or so dangerous. I have a Hawk/Testors 1/32 model of this chopper.

Back in 76 I went down to Kingsley Field in Klamath Falls for their air show. The fire department put on a rescue demonstration using a Husky. I shot the whole thing on 35mm, er, well so I thought. I was a senior in high school and taking a photograph class. I rolled my own film but didn't get it loaded in the camera correct and it was blank. I can still see the flames in the fire training plane and the Husky coming in and shooting fire retardant.

In the fire service they were long gone by my enlistment, and not deeply missed. My sense from talking to the old hands was that they were a solution looking for a problem.

I could see it being fun, from a video-game perspective, but I want nothing to do with a helo working with hot and unpredictable updrafts. And please keep it away from my truck if at all possible.

Just saying what I saw. Didn't know nothing from nothing. I can see where you're coming from though.

Got to see HH-43 bring brass to view FB-111 crash sight and drop off General Dynamics folks. A very useful and maneuverable chopper.
People tend to duck when they are running to or from helicopters. And on the HH-43 that was indeed a requirement and for some angles of approach it was quite dangerous.

But Kaman used the exact same rotor system for their K-Max UAV supply chopper, which was actually employed by the USMC in Afghanahole, so it must have worked pretty good.

One day at the Pentagon the phone rang and it was some guy from Kaman. I said, "Kaman? As in HH-43 Huskie? You're kidding! I did not even know you people were still around!" They wanted some advice about their idea to propose a small space booster based on surplus Posidon missiles. I told them that was a bad idea. The use of surplus missiles was a controversial subject around DC at the time, with some companies lobbying hard to prevent it. He sounded disappointed but Lockheed tried the same idea and got disqualified.
