KC-135s (often in C-135N configuration) were regularly identified monitoring the nuclear tests at Mururoa and Fangafauta. One, SN 12674 had to perform an emergency landing at Tahiti on july 3, 1966. The crewmen were equipped with dosimeters...

On 13 June 1971 a KC-135 TRIA (Telemetry Range Instrumentation Aircraft) SN 61-0331 from the 4950 th Test Wing disappeared with 12 crewmen and 12 civilian technicians on its return leg to Hawaii after monitoring the Encelade test at Mururoa.
