Sea Hawk FGA.6 WV854/146/J (a former FGA.4) belonging to 803 NAS totes a mixed underwing weapons load. This aircraft was lost on 25 September 1957 when its pilot ejected due to flames from a jet pipe and smoke coming into the cockpit. He was rescued by a Whirlwind helicopter (, I think "J" is HMS EAGLE)

Sept 6 1976.

A Soviet Air Forces pilot, Lieutenant Viktor Belenko, broke away from a routine training flight from the Chuguyevka Air Base in the far southeastern portion of the Soviet Union, and flew to Japanese airspace with the USSR's newest warplane, the MiG-25 "Foxbat" fighter. Intending to find the Chitose Air Base near Sapporo and land the new MiG-25 jet fighter there, Belenko ran out of fuel and landed at 1:57 PM at a civilian airport at Hakodate, where he over ran the short runway. He requested political asylum in the United States. In that the MiG-25 was new and had never been seen close enough for an inspection, American and Japanese experts gradually disassembled what was, at the time, "considered the world's most advanced fighter," which included defusing self-destruct devices that had been wired into the sensitive electronic equipment. The U.S. granted Belenko's request for asylum the day after his defection.

The fighter would turn out to be much less impressive than its reputation.

Belenko made the rounds of US defense contractors and was shown pretty much everything. He came to our place and addressed a smallish room jammed with interested listeners, but didn't really say anything that wasn't in the book. He kept dismissively referring to people he didn't like as "weak wimps" in a heavy Russian accent.
One minor correction, the MiG wasn't "gradually disassembled." It landed on 6 September and was shipped back (in crates) beginning 11 November on trucks to the cargo ship and then back to Vladivostok. There was a lot more that people wanted to do to/with it but politically it was a 3-way struggle between Japan, the US, and the USSR that superseded technical intelligence considerations.
Belenko died a few years ago not 60 miles from where I'm sitting right now, and I had no idea he was living there.
