I suspect the Ryan XV5 had some influence on the F-35 VTOL capabilities.
 
The outer stores pylons on the F-111 did not pivot, so they could not sweep the wings.
The two outer were preset at 28° the two are full sweep. With outer pylons on takeoff was at full forward (16°) and than pulled back to 28° for travel. The only ones to consistently use the outer pylons were the SAC FB-111 and as the fuel in the outer tanks was drained the tanks and pylons were dropped.
