Any one knows the speed for such refuellings? A KC-97 must be some 200 mph for cruising

We were warned about the Phantom tail hook, it could suddenly drop so we gave it a wide berth

That 97 is in a dive and going full out and that F-4 is trying to not fall out I da sky

I read of a case in VN where a F-4C got hit and needed to refuel. A KC-135A showed up just as the F-4 went dry and they tried to refuel in a dive, but finally gave up and the F-4 crew punched out.

Probably required a engine restart, 135 have towed F-4's to final destination when wounded but I don't recall if the fighter had to have at least one engine running or not.

There have been several. The one on my mind was an Eastbound pacific run and one of the F-4s had an issue I don't recall but the hooked to the boom and dragged to the nearest airport for safe recovery. I want to say Hawaii.

I'd imagine you'd want some thrust or else the towed plane risks losing the tow.
