A personal one for me. Back when I was a teenager in the 1970s I went to an airshow at RNAS Yeovilton, UK and being an avid Starfighter fan, watched the Marineflieger F-104G display from start to finish. Sadly as the pilot made his final approach to land after his display the nose of the aircraft abruptly raised beyond the vertical and the aircraft crashed on its back just short of the runway threshold. It was obvious that the pilot had not survived and despite reports that he ejected (too low), I saw no evidence of that. F-104G s/n 22-25 was obviously a write-off but as an inquisitive teen, a few weeks later when we were driving past I asked to stop so that I could take a few moments in the field where it all happened. And I picked up this grey-painted fragment which I keep to this day. I think it's part of the wing leading edge attachment piano hinge.

I searched the newspapers for more information on what might have happened but aside from this very minor entry in The Daily Telegraph a day or so later, nothing seems to have made the national press. Back in the days pre-internet that was pretty much all we knew for probably twenty or so years.
