One of the Navy's 3 wheel FWD rear steer jeep conversions, I remember racing them about 20 years after that picture was taken around NAS's!
Maybe it's just a Navy thing but if you only have three wheels, how can you have FWD? I don't know, I was Air Force and we needed four wheels to have FWD (seem only natural as F=Four W=Wheel and D=Drive)?

They actually reversed the engine and transmission and relocated the rear axle to the front, they were rear steer with the 1 rear wheel. the conversions were done in the late 1940's or early 1950's. they usually had a electrical generator mounted to them for starting the early jet engines. By the time I was around them they were mostly retired to the Navel Air Stations and used as electrical power carts. Here is a small article about them
