This scene was just a few months after I was fortunate to spend a week on board summer of 1960. The F8U-1P brings back the sadness felt on board, as two weeks before one of the photo Crusaders was lost. The inventory was normally two photo birds flown by USMC Captains and the fatality was felt by the crew. When I asked the Master Chief, assigned to us, how it happened, we were told he missed the cable, engine didn't power up and unfortunately the aircraft rolled right just as he ejected, into the side of the ship. As a dumb 19 year old, I asked, "What did they do?" The Chief said, "The ship stopped and we hosed down the port side."An F8U-1P of VCP-61 with a Demon and Skyraider on the USS Hancock (CVA-19) February 1961 NMNA

That's typical military humor, which is by its very nature is designed to help kill the pain and move on. While as a young airman at Dover we proceed the Jonestown cult. was in the detail and we had some pretty unsavory jokes about it. It's how you cope.
