If one was in a dive and the other in a climb, they wouldn't be together for very long at all. In truth, the KB-50 was at max speed and thus low alpha (angle-of-attack), while the F-104 was much nearer to minimum speed, and thus a higher alpha. Together, they may have been in a slight dive to allow the KB-50 to reach a higher speed.
