And this is a huge middle finger to all idiots who judge people for their religion or ethnicity.

I'm trying to avoid politics, but you only need half a word I guess.

Having lived in the Middle East for over five years, I can attest to the fact that like people everywhere, the communities there have heroes and villains, leaders and cowards, and like everywhere else most people of Arabic, Persian, or Muslim groups are basically good folks.

I reserve my ire for the assholes who use religion to justify barbarity.

Exactly. I wish more people would highlight the fact that Ahmed El Ahmad, the 43-year-old father of two, who bravely risked his life, being shot twice, to save his neighbours celebrating Hanukkah is a Muslim. Yes, here we have a case of an average, every day Muslim stepping in to help save his Jewish neighbours. We should be celebrating this and not just going on claiming Australia is anti semitic and ramping up the hateful rhetoric.

One of my favourite quotes, albeit fictional, is from Sgt Buster Kilrain in the film 'Gettysburg."The thing is, you cannot judge a race. Any man who judges by the group is a pea-wit."

The last part is particularly important for me. We like to label people by the colour of their skin, their socio-economic position, their age, and any number of other factors. I try really hard to avoid stereotyping people because, inevitably, it will be wrong.

Whatever THAT means.
All hono(u)r to the unarmed citizen who tackled the murderer when authorities were absent.

On a mailing list devoted to a grand-strategic WWII wargame, we just had someone send their first message with a sig (email signature) that justified Hitler's actions by attributing actions to an entire group that he notoriously targeted. I mean, WTF?

The amount of ignorance and hate in the world can only be measured in tears.

Mankind is a tribal animal. We survived for millennia by banding together in family, clan, or tribal groups (which we name "us"), wherein anyone who was not of our tribe (which we name "them") was treated with suspicion. We're hard-wired to behave like this, whether it's supporting sports teams, socio-economic alignment, age, religion, or political affiliation.

Tribalism associated with sport teams is mostly harmless (although occasionally violent). Other forms of tribalism can be much more harmful. I inherently distrust anyone who adopts the language of "us" and "them", whether it's a politician, religious leader, journalist, or (to use that dreadful term) internet influencer. We are all part of humankind. I don't care if you're Catholic, Protestant, Moslem, atheist, Hindu, Sikh, or agnostic...you all have a right to live and believe what you choose. Likewise, I refuse to believe that the woes of a particular nation are solely down to the current or last political leaders: most problems have long gestation periods and are the result of complex combinations of circumstances.

I also distrust anyone who's seeking to make me angry. Hard problems are not solved by simple fixes applied in the heat of high-intensity emotions.

So I'm going to keep holding on to Buster Kilrain's truism, and try to take people one at a time. It can be hard but to do otherwise is to descend into the spiral of hatred and bile that seems to be constantly spewed by those who espouse the paradigm of "us" -vs- "them."
