Can't be true. Raid to Hanover March 25, 1945. 13 aircrafts airborne by 0653 and over the target at 0950 and returned by 1240. No enemy fighters in the area, no combat report stating fighter attacks (only FLAK). Source AIR 27/2145-33 and AIR 27/2145-34 Combat reports march 1945 from 629 squadron.

I didn't think it was true either. Dad was on this op. 6-Group reported "No fighters were seen and no claims were made."

100-Group reported: "The Hanover force, made one of the deepest penetrations by a daylight force into Germany to that date, and the fighter escort was most complementary noting the bombers, flying in two separate gaggles about 10 miles apart in line astern. Each gaggle was about 6 miles long and 1-2 miles wide with good height and formations well concentrated with no stragglers. The formation was "magnificent…if Groups always flew as today, it would be possible to stop practically any [fighter] attack."
