Sanding /polishing ?

The only way you'll achieve that Rob, is by using the bright Bare Metal Foil products. They do self adhesive sheets in various grades of 'aluminium' finish, as well as Chrome, the latter intended for model car use. Have a look at Squadron, or just 'Google' Bare Metal Foil Company.
 

ah. well I was just thinking about how I could do that, and I think it would be impossible to do the whole fuselage. so I decided I'm gonna get that "polished aluminum" bottle and airbrush it on.
 
i know this is an little old but...i worked in a dental lab for several years and made teeth with an acrylic facing. in the finishing we used a green rubber barrel ( 1/4 inch diameter 1 1/4 inches long) to knock down the roughness from working the plastic with stones...practice on a sprue or junk piece because the rubber will cut even on low speed. then we used a black buffing compound followed by a liquid polish. toothpaste should give you the same result. its about the mildest polishing compound you can get...it does it everyday for people with acrylic veneers.. hell i polish gold and sliver with it too. you can use it with a dremel on a cotton wheel...very low speed...it too will cut if you lay into it.

For my final polishing, I use 2000 grit sandpaper that I buy from an automotive parts store. I can modify clear parts and sand with progressively finer paper ending with the 2000 and then a coat of future, comes out crystal clear.
