A shark's mouth is on its underside, back from the front end of its body. For the sharkmouth to really work on an aircraft, you need a bit of sleek "nose" out ahead of the mouth. That is why it works so well on certain types and not others IMHO.

At the large end of the shark scale is the Great White

And at the smaller end of the shark scale, the Spiny Dogfish.

The 457 RAAF squadron Spitfires started with small sharkmouths but then they just kept on making them bigger and bigger. Somewhere along the line they lost the plot!
