The variant numbers were all due to time rather than simple modification. I.e. the Mk.VIII hit the drawing board and was being developed before the Mk.IX, though the IX entered service before the VIII.

Btw, the Mk.V production hit about 6,479 while the Mk.IX hit 5,665. The third most common was my fave, the Mk.VIII, at 1,658.
 
oh it's not that bad, God was British too you see, he just gets a bit more credit as he created absolutely everything ;)
 
The most produced Mark was the V, the most produced type was Supermarine type 361 (Mark IX + Mark XVI)

At least this is what is stated in my books...
