I've been thinking about getting a StG44 replica. They're made in Germany and are comparable in weight and finish to the original SturmGewehr 44, but only chambered for .22 LR

I got one runs pretty good keep her clean and she will for you to.I can off load a mag of 25rds in 12/15s and that's 36g that's a bit of lead in a 4/5" area at 40/50yds.I have the MP 40 in 9mm issues with the trigger and light primers strikes stay away.

The GSG StG44 is recommended to use the high power .22LR ammo for optimum performance.
Aside frim the fact that the SturmGewehr is simply badass, it is also the original "assault weapon" and will be fun at the range triggering the "omg, you have an AR!" crowd.

Agree! Decades ago my airplane nut buddy and I went to the indoor range where I was a member to fire the Auto Ordinance M1A5, classed by BATF a pistol, i.e. no shoulder stock & semiauto only. Several other shooters went to the owner whining about full auto shooters using the range.

Further up in this thread (like over ten years ago), I posted about my Walther/Colt (Umarex) rifle. It's based on the AR-15 M4 but only chambered for .22LR and has been a great source of anxiety at the range for the above-mentioned crowd because it's black and scary looking.

We don't have that problem in Texas. I live in a community which is largely plotted on 10ac lots and I burn a lot (as do my neighbors) of ammo in the back 'pasture'. Nobody is frightened by the AR-10 or M1A1 but I don't shoot those on my property. I do however shoot a lot of 45 and 40 cal and 22cal. in the AR pistols.

If you want to win bar bets, let them try and guess which was the first (and actual) battle-tested assault rifle.
A good number of people won't know, but it was the StG44.
It was designed to have a high RoF, select-fire and compact enough for an urban fighting environment which most modern military rifles are based on to this day.
SturmGewehr literally translates to "assault rifle"
