In the US manufacturing industry it was hoped hat China could be used to build aircraft sub-assemblies (at a cheap labor rate) and then have those components shipped to the US for the more complicated final assembly. Before Boeing swallowed them up, McDonnell Douglas invested billions in China and I believe some of the later MD-95s had major sub assemblies built in China. Airbus did this too.

Aren't many plastic kits made in China.
Years back, when "made in Taiwan" was popular, much of it was actually made in China and assembled in Taiwan so it could be marked "made in Taiwan."
