-5.7 earthquake a few minutes ago. Not my first quake but the strongest: the whole house was shaking. A walk around showed no damage.
-The epicenter was 22km from a "neighboring" town. I hope there were no serious injuries or destruction.
-Why is neighboring in quotes? Look at a map of Nevada and see how scattered towns in the central part of the state are.

-Now USGS says 5.5 not 5.7.
-So far since 3PM Pacific time (UTC-8) USGS shows 10 aftershocks between 2.5 and 3.6
-The seismology lab at U of Nevada, Reno, shows bunches more but lower strength.
-So far no reports on damage or injuries. The epicenter area is mostly uninhabited, maybe a mine or ranch, but plenty of wildlife.
-USGS = U.S. Geological Survey

In some parts of this big island of ours, your neighbour could be 200 or more k away.
-And that's one reason I'd love to visit "Down Under" and take the Ghan.
-I had the pleasure of working with some Australian troops in Vietnam. Great guys.
-One NCO had a book with photos of Australian wildlife. Kids looked at the photos with "Who are you trying to kid?" expressions. Come on, a platypus? No way, hombre!!

-Thanks for the photos, Vic. Wifey and I watched a railroad TV series that covered the Ghan in one episode. Looks yummy. Then rent a car and drive back? Nah, I tried driving in Ireland and couldn't handle it. Going straight was okay but then came a roundabout...
-Temp here 19° F (-7° C) but no wind.
-Earthquake update: USGS now rates the big one at 5.8. There have been constant aftershocks, at least 50, most in the 1 to 3 range but one 4.2. I can't copy the plot from the UNR Seismology lab (Nevada Seismological Lab); it just shows a pile of markers.

It has been a very wet year (we did not need to buy in water even once) and we have had some nice rain the last few days but the annoying part is how much difference being on the "wrong" side of the ridge causes. We have better soil and our friend has better rain. Because we have better soil our dam fills quicker and last night made it a metre deeper but until then the soil sucked up all the rainfall so there was no run off. People are already talking about a repeat of the "once in a hundred years" flood events in 2010 and 2013 because there is already flooding about 15km away and a month earlier than the same area flooded in 2013.

EDIT - just noticed XL has not calculated the RH column properly

We are having the first real snowfall of the season - nothing major as it is only supposed to be 4"-6" over a 12 hr period, but the shovels will have to come out as it will be below freezing for the next few days.

Boise, Idaho
After a few days of rain (and snow up high - the local ski resort is fully open), we had mostly clear skies, some breezes, and a near-record high of 59 F.
Nice!!
Nice up here, too ..... -16C, clear blue skies ...and, unusually, no wind. We definitely need more snow though.... time to get out skiing
