Fingers crossed for you mate. The East Coast is apparently alot milder than over our way, but we do get the good stuff now and again.
 
Hot and very smoky. The smoke is not even from our fires but mostly from down south in the US. (You hear that Donald?). Our local fires are growing, and our evacuation alert continues. The authorities all say there's not much to really worry about yet but they are doing a big and hurried evacuation of a couple of big nursing homes up on the hill "out of an abundance of caution". The firebombers cannot do much with this thing but there are helicopters all over the place -- a big Sikorski flew over a little while ago...

This thing could blow up tomorrow or it could smolder and burn for weeks. My wife is really nervous. We were over in Calgary this morning and the smoke was even worse than here in B C. Fire season is definitely here...

An update -- we now have lightning and thunder to the West. The closest really big flashes are 11 to 12 seconds away -- I think that amounts to a couple of miles. No sign of rain -- just lightning. A very spooky night, in fire season.
 
Another update -- 25 minutes later -- huge thunderstorm -- lightning, thunder and streams of water running down the street. The Weather Network just popped up with a warning of a "severe thunderstorm" running right through Kimberley with high wind, possible large hail, and possible local flooding.

So an hour ago we were hot and smoky and super dry with fires burning -- now we have this. What happens to our 8 fires? A truly schizophrenic night -- this can be a crazy place to live in...

I was taught that every 3 seconds from the lightning to the thunder is about 1 km, so by that reckoning it was about 4 km away at that time.

Hope that storm helps get rid of some of those fires too.

Interesting as I was taught one second per maile away. Maybe US lightning is faster, IDK! Elvis said there was nothing faster than the US Male.
 
You usually space the count by saying "One thousand one, one thousand two, one thousand three,..." which gives you the correct count of one second per thousand feet of distance.

Twenty Five plus years back I was driving home through Cocoa Beach and lightning hit a power pole right next to where my car was stopped at a traffic light. Not only did I "hear the sound before I saw the flash," I FELT the heat!

The very next day I was doing some painting on the back porch when a lightning strike occurred very nearby. I quickly went inside, deciding I had received enough Morse Code From God for the time being.
 
Back to hot and very dry. The fire evacuation alert is cancelled, though the fires still burn. That storm did change the big fire and the powers that be decided we're OK. We hope so...
