if you pay attemption in the scene youll se that when the brick hits the german´s helmet, instinctively he push the trigger and runs scared, the british scared by the shot, crawl back.

I think I can answer both questions regarding why he ran when hit in the helmet with a thrown object AND why his uniform is so tight.

Puckerfactor. There is probably a yard of cloth up that soldiers backside. I know there would be in mine.
