And the XVI is basically a IX with a Packard Merlin, also built in "low back" with bubble canopy, whereas the XIV is Griffon-powered, both in high and low back.
Yes as a stop gap till the VII (Pressurized) and VIII (beefed up wing), in the end much like the F-102 v F-106 (ultimate interceptor) the nine (oh sorry) IX was built in much greater numbers than the planed replacement. The VIII was considered by many to be the best of the Merlin line,
