It hasn't been because of earlier formulas Geo. The main reason for the unfavorable opinions was the lack of experience in applying of the paints. Hataka colours are offered as three lines. The red one for the airbrushing typically, the blue one for applying with a brush although they can be applied with the airbrush too ,( both are the acrylic type of a coat ) and the orange line that is the cellulose lacquer series for airbrushing. All colours are semi-transparent what means that the surface of model has to be prepared for applying of the colours. For sure a primer has to be used firstly. But the most important thing is the preparation of the surface. It has to be as smooth as possible without any scratches, dust etc... I would say it must be cleaned fully, just perfect. The "translucency" ( although the cover of the blue series is fine and the one coat does it right away ) helps greatly with getting the good effect of wathering for instance but it may require airbrushing of two or more layers of a paint to get the full colouring. All the paints have to be stirred very well before using.

An addition to Jan's post...
