Anyone know who started the practice of marking their aircraft with 'victory' claims? If not the person, then perhaps the country?

And while we're at it, why did the Germans (and I believe Finns) mark their claims on the rudder, whereas almost all other countries displayed them under the cockpit. Except for the Russians and Japanese (in the rare cases they did), who 'usually' displayed them between cockpit and tailplane.

There were exceptions of course. High scoring P-39 Soviet aces had their markings on the nose. And I don't know of any Regia Aeronautica or Armée de l'Air aces who marked their aircraft at all. Although Free-French pilots, and those of the Normandie-Niemen, did do so.
