Was there anything that they could have done to improve the Cutlass, for a more lengthy, more successful, USN career, or was she that flawed in her design that nothing would have helped?

Get rid of the J-34s and put in J-57s

Another promising airframe that fell victim to the learning curve with early jet turbine engine design, a la XF-90, X-3, etc. In the case of the Cutlass it was aggravated by the stall characteristics of the delta wing and the unique requirements of carrier operations.
