Watching cars fail going through water

I spent some of my early life in West Africa. After the Biafran war many bridges were down and fording rivers was the only option. My father drove a Land Rover*, so a capable vehicle. During the 'small rains' or in the rainy season proper many rivers became impassable, but others could be forded. Nobody ever drove straight into the water! We always stopped and then assessed the situation on foot, with the aid of a stout pole. Only when the crossing was deemed viable did any vehicle attempt to drive through.

Lessons in life, clearly not learned by the average, city dwelling, citizen today :)

It was very bumpy and very noisy in the back. I can still hear the chains on the tailgate fifty years later!
