Winter operations of the Luftwaffe

Everyone came up with systems for keeping the aircraft engines warm and ready. This picture, taken at a press day at Biggin Hill, shows the system for a Spitfire. It isn't even particularly cold. That is water not ice on the ground beneath the aircraft and other photographs taken that day show people dressed warmly and for the wet, hardly for Arctic conditions.

That's what it's pretending to be. There is a whole sequence of posed photographs from this press day, I think in the IWM collection.
