  2. Need help identifying wing section.

Hi, I’m new here! I recently purchased this wing section at an antique store with no accompanying information. I cannot for the life of me figure out what it belongs to. I’m pretty sure it’s an elevator, but who knows at this point. (Please disregard the excess holes and bolts, someone made this...
  3. Planes of Fame Airshow 2014 Horsemen

Here is our 2014 airshow featuring the Horsemen. They did two acts: one with P-51s and one with F-86s. This isn't the whole show .... just the Horsemen ... Steve Hinton, Dan Friedken, and Ed Shipley in no particular order. I think Dan was flying lead (F-86), Steve was left wing, and Ed was...
  4. SOme Specs on Rare Bear

I found out some information on the Reno racer Rare Bear and thought the members might like to see it. A stock F8F-2 has a wing span of 35.5 ft and a wing area of 244 sq ft. Rare Bear’s specs are as follows: Span = 30.5 ft Area = 221.6 sq ft Effective Aspect Ratio = 4.20 Root Airfoil...
  5. Another Spitfire down !

After Karl alerted me, I checked the BBC News, and a Spitfire has force-landed near Ashford, in Kent. It appears to be a T.IX, two-seater, and is one I didn't know of, being German-based. First report stated it made a wheels-up landing in a field, and the pilot was unhurt, and out of the...

P-47 Top speed without wing Pylons?

I was curious of what the top speed of the P-47 would be without wing pylons. I found that the Fw-190 found a 8-10kph increase in speed with the removal of its ETC 504(Which is located under the fuselage. By using common sense, it would only make sense if the P-51 had a better increase of speed...

    Earlier Tempest/No Typhoon

My question concerns the Hawker Typhoon/Tempest: How early could a Sabre Tempest have been developed? How soon would Camm know that the Tiffie's wing would be a drawback at high altitudes, and what would earlier availability of the Tempest mean? Anyone have any thoughts?
  8. Planes of Fame Update

Hi, I revived this old thread to stop from continuing to hijack the "What's the Deal with Russian Wing Design?" thread. To continue from there, go to post #8. If you haven't seen this thread before, you might like the pics before post #8. OK, I went back and re-loaded some of the pics...

  10. Fw 190: the good, the bad and the ugly

The formidable fighter should have it's own thread, rather to share it with a Me 209 ;) The G.55 and Re.2005 offered more 'stretch' than Bf 109, I will agree with that. Unfortunately, without late DB 605 versions (or Jumo 213 or DB 603), they will not be able to compete vs. the best the West...

Me 262 problem blending replacement engine with wing

Hello, everyone. I'm working on a Revell 1/72 Me 262. I've attached and glued on a resin, replacement engine to the wing. However, after attaching the engine, I noticed there was a long gap that runs between the side of the engine and the kit part. I filled this gap with grey tamiya putty...

  16. Messerschmitt Bf 108 Tafun walkaround

Well, some might say it's a Nord N.1002 Pingouin II as it was built in France, but I have been reliably informed that this particular aircraft was first constructed by Messerschmitt in Germany in June 1944, the date 6th August is associated with it, but I'm not sure whether this is its roll out...

    He116 vs. Fw200

For the naval recon role it seems that there was a better choice than the Fw200, the He116; it had comparable range using much weaker engines; with the same engines the He116 could have performed even better. Was there a reason it wasn't tried? Heinkel He 116 - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia...

Me 262 Wrk Nr. 500531 interesting paint scheme question

I came across these interesting photos of Me 262 Wrk. Nr. 500531 in "Stormbirds" by Brett Green and Benjamin Evans on Pg. 24. The caption refers to the mottling as having a distinctive "chessboard appearance." The caption states, and I quote, "the solid base color is probably RLM 82 Light Green...
  19. OV-1 Mohawk

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Grumman_OV-1_Mohawk Can anyone shed a little more light on this aircraft? Did the US Army fly these? - I thought it was forbidden from flying fixed wing aircraft. Did this aircraft overlap with the OV-10 Bronco? - Both operated in Desert Strom 1 - Both have been...
  20. Wing Design

Some folks in here have asked several times about wing design. Attached is a chapter on wing design so you can read it and get your feet wet. It isn't exactly the last word on the subject, but is a pretty good starting place for budding wing designers. No paricular reason, just interesting, at...
