Terry, nice detail of the later "stamped" type. That is the type I'm building for Ross. A simple device with an electromagnetic coil and a diaphragm.
The cycling of power obviously makes the diaphragm vibrate and hey presto!

More work... the 6D/83 early Oxygen fitting (pic 1)converted from the later type (pic 2)
The bracket for fitting to the side of the fuselage was hand cut, shaped and bent before adding 4BA bolts to secure the bayonet receiver.
The bracket attaches to the fuselage skin and a stiffener by 2BA bolts, the skin one is countersunk and will have a spacing washer added.
The conversion was done with a cut length of 1" poly pipe sliced up one side and wrapped around the lower taper. Car bog completed the sealing.
Writing added with a 000 brush as well as my unsteady hands will let me!

Good stuff Darryl. Can I ask where you get your BA bolts? I've been going to LAS Aerospace for our Mosquito restoration but not all hardware sizes that we need are available there.

Andy, there's an old fashioned engineering supplies / ironmongers just 150 meters from my house (think of the "four candles" sketch from 'The Two Ronnies !), who probably stock, or can get virtually anything (including fork handles !).
Let me know what you need, and I'll check it out. If they have the stuff you require, I can easily get it, and ship it to you - my small contribution to the restoration.
I would guess that any bolts / nuts would not be certified for flight, but for a static restoration, I'm sure this would not be a problem.

Thanks for the offer Terry. It may be a while before I need to replenish stock and confirm needs. There was one particular long countersunk 2BA bolt with a 4.1 inch shank that I was after but we may be able to make do with a slightly shorter one.
In theory we are trying to use hardware certified for aviation but on the other hand we are also sometimes reusing bolts removed from the original airframe which isn't quite kosher anyway.

Andy, I get mine from Classic Fasteners in South Oz. If I needed the really long ones, I'd make them myself as they are impossible to get here. An M5 bolt will turn down nicely and re-thread to a 2BA if memory serves.

Reminds me of the time I spent making an AV presentation with the BBMF, back in the early 1980's.
I was shown a small self-tapping screw,, and the box it came from, used for some minor, non-vital fastening. The box was stamped with a batch number, and the required aviation certification. Each screw worked out at something like 50 Pence each, maybe more, quite a price back then.
Next to the box, was another, identical box, with the exact same batch number (but without certification), purchased from a local hardware store for about 75 Pence for the entire box !!!

Darryl, I've been modifying some of our bolts already, mainly by threading further up the shank and cutting off the end to create shorter lengths as needed.

Yep, roughly the equivalent of the 1982 prices quoted in my last post, the 50 Pence being for one small self-tapping screw, not the box of 50 or 100 !

The panel has been completely finished by Replica Aircraft Parts now, researched and designed in conjunction with them especially for the very earliest Spitfires like K9817.
Also done and on its way is the Undercarriage Indicator.

RAP did the cockpit interior sets for the movie Dunkirk which, regardless of the movie as a whole, were stunning. The quality of the work has been a real motivation to do justice to the items with the rest of the cockpit fittings I am making AND the K9817 build in general.
