For my covid -19 project I built a bagged version of the classic Monogram 1/48 series Hurricane. I built quite a few of theses monogram kits as a youngster. In 1998 I built the re-issue of the Hurricane, that I kept for several years when it met an unfortunate fate after a move. I found a bagged kit of it on line last year, which was cheap, and fortunately I kept the box and spare parts from 1998.

I built this as a Tropical Mk 1 as flown by Canadian Ace Vernon "Woody" Woodward in late 1940, achieving 7 of his 20 kills while flying Hurricanes in N Afrika for 33 Squadron . I had a spare De Havilland prop from a Classic Airframes Hurricane kit, that fit perfectly to the prop backing plate in the Monogram kit.

As to be expected there are a few issues with an older kit, a missing prop shaft, the prop is supposed to rotate, some warp-age in the wings and the pilots leg was broken off as well as the upper front of the rad housing.

Here's some pictures of the building process, the pilot painted, the dash which is the decal cut out of the decal sheet, and glued into place, and the tropical air filter drilled out to look better

Here's some of the larger assembly, not much cockpit detail in these old kits and scratch building is above my skill level, but I am going with the closed canopy anyways..

For painting I used some old polyscale azure blue and mid stone and vallejo dark earth. This was my first attempt at a soft edge camouflage paint job which honestly was a big jump up in my air brushing skills, but after many touch ups and practice I felt like I was getting a handle on it, and was feeling a bit of that "craft buzz". For reference pictures I used Tony Holmes, "Hurricane Aces 1939-40, Hugh Hallidays " Woody: A Fighter Pilots Album" and Michel Lavigne & W/C James Edwards, " Hurricanes Over the Sands". The pictures helped me to decide to go with the soft edge look.

I am using vallejo BS450, BS Dark Earth, it looks about right too me, much better than the old poly scale which always looked too green or olive.

A few more pictures, overall the fit of the kit was very good not a lot of sanding or filling , just mostly around the tropical filter. The landing gear works and the prop rotates.
