The England team was picked by the press, playing Lampard Gerrard and Beckham made as much sense as playing 3 Beckenbauers for their clubs they were attacking, playmaking midfielders who took set pieces and corners.
Yes i get what you are saying, but again it comes down to the manager being too scared to say no, im in charge and picking players on merit/performance and not just because everyone expects. I cant think of one single England manager in the last two decades that wasnt a yes man for the F.A. That's why the late great Brian Clough was never given the job. They knew they could never have controlled him. I have been watching and supporting England since the world cup of Mexico '86'. And from that time to today there has only been two managers that did a good job. Bobby Robson and Terry Venables. Every other manager has failed to motivate or/and get the best out of British talent. And the names i mentioned were just examples. Ferdinand, Neville, Cole, Owen, Heskey, Seaman, Cambell, Adams, Ince, Scholes, Mills, Dyer, Fowler, the list is endless. All supposedly good players in their prime and at club level. But bring on a major tournament and they are out of their depth. Trouble with past England squads has been lack of creativity and playmaking. When things dont go to plan England seem to fall apart. But lets see what happens now the pressure is off..

I know about and understand the yellow card syatem for fouls. That's fine. But why don't they yellow card the injury embellishers? Does soccer have an unsportsmanlike conduct penalty like the NHL? If not why not?

They do. Just not enough.

A Korean received a yellow card in the game against Germany for flopping and faking a foul.

But what im saying is, regardless of how Germany might view England, there has never been any important games where either side has totally dominated the game (apart from when England beat Germany 5-1 in Munich) But if you wont take my word for it here are the stats for England Vs Germany so far.....
Meetings 32.
Games won by England 13
Games won by Germany 15
And 4 draws.

If that's not what one would call close, or evenly matched then i dont know what is. And the two years i spent in Germany the fans attending the matches certainly had a deep dislike for English supporters. Im not suggesting English fans are angels far from it. But they are no worse or no better at behaviour than German fans. England often get a bad rep abroad because foreign teams seem to make an effort to goad English fans into trouble by either supporting whatever team England might be playing at the time and then taunting them into violence. Hooliganism is not as bad as it used to be thankfully. But i have been to games all over Europe and the world and maybe it's because we are an island, but it seems people instantly dislike England without even giving a valid reason. Take the posts on this thread for example. No sooner has Germany been eliminated, suddenly everyone wants to cheer for Belgium. I have to ask myself is it coincidence, or is it something that runs deeper. Im sure people will say im talking rubbish. But if thats true, whats so special about Belgium that England lacks. Because from where i am they look pretty damn equal in all aspects. Tbh i couldnt care less what other fans think. But i wont stand by and have anyone try to belittle English football. The premier league is arguably the most entertaining league in Europe if not the world. And before anyone tells me im wrong about that, then just look up how many world class players have joined British clubs over the years. Almost everyone at some stage of their career. We might be just a small island, but we can give as good as we get. After all, we invented the game just like we invented everything else. Oh and fyi, from where im sitting talent is exactly what Germany lack. Your best players are reaching the end of their careers and if they continue to play as badly as they have in this tournament i'd get used to going home early. And if Germany aspire to beat there rivals such as Holland and Italy, just remind me where Holland and Italy are right now? Oh thats right, back at home with all the other teams that weren't good enough to even qualify. And im really not hating, just saying. Imo

What you describe has nothing to do with a good rivalry between teams and fans. Naturally England and Germany play each other hard, it's what teams do. England and their fan's cling to this "past glory" of 1966, and think that makes them a rival team. Statistics mean nothing in those regards, and England is just another team to Germany like any other. That does not mean they don't respect the English team. They absolutely do.

The other teams have a tradition as rivals with Germany, because they more often than not are competing with Germany for the top spot (not including this year).

But you can cling to a false rivalry glory status if it makes you feel better about your team and "fanhood".

As for your statistics, you should break it down to meaningful and friendly games. Winning meaningless friendly games is goid and all, but doesn't get you anywhere. I do like how you conveniently ignore the last time Germany and England played in a game that mattered. A 4-1 domination by Germany in the 2010 World Cup quarterfinals. We can cling to the past if you want. I don't need to, but more often than Not Germany beats England when it matters and counts. Too bad we won't get the opportunity this time, because of this failure by the team this time around.

Here is some nice info on the "onesided" phenomenon that England believes is a rivalry...

England–Germany football rivalry - Wikipedia

Meanwhile I look forward to our real rival matchups against Italy and Netherlands in the future. I do enjoy a good game against England though, like I do any good game.

I forgot to address the talent part. If you think talent is what is lacking, you don't follow or know the sport as well as you think. Or live in a bubble.

Germany has one of the best youth development programs in the entire sport. It's a reason they remain competitive. Even the young players that are now going home are world class talent, but they lack leadership and cohesion. They do not play as one team, like German teams of past.

This will certainly be addressed. Germany has to find it's next Lahm or Schweinsteiger.

Im only engaging in a little patriotic banter. Its nothing personal. My point is simply this, i dont believe there is an elite group that either expects or believes they alone are the only teams good enough to stand a chance of winning. And even if there was, England would or should be part of that group. Secondly im not sure German fans in general believe there is nil rivalry when Eng play Ger. The same goes for the players. I seriously doubt either sides players expect to win or have no healthy respect for the capability of each country. Having played amatuer football i know that kind of attitude will get you into trouble.

On a completely different note. I just found this bizarre story suggesting Russian gold stolen by the nazis during ww2 is buried underneath the English fan enclosure! lol
Is the fabled £225m Russian Amber Room looted by the Nazis buried under England's World Cup FAN ZONE?

8 changes for England side. Seems like it will just be a test game for fringe players after all. Looking forward to seeing what Vardy can do though. My tip for the final. Croatia v Brazil

Then you would be wrong. Sorry, but it's true. But as has been pointed out, the English try and make it into a Rivalry. We hear about it every tournament. English fans think it's the next battle of Dunkirk or D-Day, and the German's are like "It's just another football game" while rolling their eyes.

Being two good teams does not make a rivalry. I'm not sure if you understand what a rivalry is. It has nothing to do with statistics or anything of that nature. England is just not viewed as a rivalry like the Netherlands or Italy. It's no different than Netherlands and France for instance. The fans and teamd don't view the game, the same as a game between Germany or Belgium for instance.

It doesn't mean England is a terrible team, or viewed as a lesser team. That is not the case. It has zilch to do with a healthy respect.

It seems to me you just like to argue. Are you suggesting you know what goes on in the dressing room and the minds of the players? Please.... And i might not have the greatest knowledge about ww2 history, but i know football. Sooo germany one of the best youth academies in the world huh? Whoopy doo! Just how many of those players do you think will make it to the top level?
That statement alone shows you talk a good game but your tactics are flawed. So define the rivalry between germany, argentina, holland, italy, brazil etc... Where does this rivalry come from and why did it start? Because if its about who has won what, how many times, then thats not rivalry, its arrogance. Do you know how much revenue the English premier league brings in each year? 1.7 billion more than its closest european rival. Ironically the bundesliga! Your arrogance is quite testing. Not to mention the way you patronise. So your telling me because germany is landlocked to half a dozen countries thats the reason for the rivalry? Oh and dont make out like im talking about the war when referring to england v germany. Thats not what i said at all, so dont try to pass off your uneducated opinions as fact. I was referring to the way England have lost important games to Germany in the past, ie: Penalty shootout Italia 90. Now if you dont mind i have better things to do with my time than try to work out your logic. Good day sir

I will say, the resorting to personal insults and attacks is a sure sign of a lack of an educated argument. It is what one resorts to, when one does not have one...
