That shot was captured by the rear facing camera of the lead plane. It is part of a sequence that shows the final, fatal seconds of the burning plane.
The surviving aircraft were unaware of the fate of their squadron mates until the film was developed.
During my time at Grissom, I spent quite a bit of time looking at all of the planes in the park.
I was in the 1915 Comm Sqdn. I was a computer repairman that worked on the 465L RCC. The terminals were in the Wing Command Post. Its primary, thank God not used, was to pass the message from the President to launch the alert aircraft of the 305 Air Refueling Wing at Grissom.
I have been back to Grissom a few times and so much has changed. The buildings were I worked are still there. The building with the Command Post has greatly changed.

It was an Apple to Orange comparison. A B-58 Wing had more aircraft than a B-52 Wing. That is just from a quick scan. I will post more as I read the book.
