Speaking for myself, had the plane been my property I would have found a qualified Japanese pilot maybe even a WWII pilot who had flown the Zero and allowed him to have the first flight. Insurance being what it is today maybe that was prohibitively expensive or even not allowed by the company

Most of Japanese feel the same too, Mike.

Japan's postwar aviation laws did not expect anybody would fly such old war birds when they had been entirely destroyed when the war was over.
If anyone wants to fly, he or she or organization has to apply the flight permission to authority with airworthiness certificate which takes long time and much cost.

On the other hand, your FAA certificate for the airframe and pilot is almighty in Japan.
Masahide Ishizuka, owner of the Zero, would have thought FAA route was quicker and cheaper.

I sometimes wonder why Americans do not celebrate the end of Vietnam War flying HU-1s over Washington D.C.
You migh understand our mind.
