During World War II she spent 30 months in the Marine Corps, where she was one of the first members of the Women's Reserve and spent time as a typist and a truck driver despite publicly denying any military service


Now, why would she deny military service? Not popular with liberal Hollywood back in the day?
 
I suspect it was more to do with her medical history. That would have terminated her Hollywood career in an instant. And if her military record became public, so would that unfortunate episode...
