On a serious note: Russia already had important demographic issues before the war. War causalities, brain drain due to sanctions and over all, mobilization exodus, have deepened the crisis.

If they start sinking grain ships indiscriminately, more countries will have reason to want to hurt the Russians. It would literally be easier to sink the entire Russian Black Sea Fleet (including the subs), and largely knock out the Russian air force and short range ballistic missile assets in the border areas, than to escort the Ukraine ships. And that does not even take into account the bad effects of the loss of grain to the rest of the world.

As RogerdeLluria implied, ti would not be a good idea to piss of Turkey.

Gobble gobble . But not just Turkey. In the Black Sea, NATO also has the Bulgarian and Romanian fleets.

Imagine you're the captain of the forty year old Romanian corvette C.E. Sebastian escorting a bulk carrier from the Bosporus to Odessa. A pair of SU-34s roar over head, turn and launch their antiship missiles at the bulk carrier, setting it on fire. Your only anti-air weapon is your 30 mm CIWS, so you engage as they fly past while radioing to NATO command for help.
