From what I gather, Ukraine's push into Russia proper wasn't aimed at diverting Russian resources but rather creating a situation where the Russian public has to becime aware that the war has come to their doorstep and no matter how Russian media spins it, this is real.

It also can present a bargaining chip if Russia wants it back, then they need to give up some territory, too.

And here's an interesting point to ponder:
if the U.S. says Ukraine cannot use long range weapons launched from Ukraine into Russia, then how about launching long range weapons from Russia to hit Russian targets?

The Ukrainian advance into Russia's Kursk region has so far failed to achieve one of its main objectives: diverting Russian troops from the front lines of eastern Ukraine in a bid to reshape the battlefield.
Putin knows that Ukraine will not be allowed to hold Russian territory postwar and that Ukraine does not have the stomach to brutalize Russian civilians. There was no downside to letting Ukraine expend men and resources in Kursk while he ignored the matter and focused on taking Ukrainian territory.
