I think that it is not too far from the truth to change do nothing to do the bare minimum to keep Ukraine alive while testing our latest weapons and see how the next war might develop might be closer to the truth.
Most of the weapons sistems the West is sending are far from from the lastest: Leopard 1, M113, Bradleys, Hawk and Patriot SAMs, Guepards. Most of the munitions were nearing expiry date. Even the M-1 and F-16s aren't the lastest versions.

Agreed. And to be honest, given the antiquity of so much Russian kit, it's not a bad idea.

I do want to say, though, that the Bradleys are punching well above their weight. The Patriots as well, while older models, are getting good kills. And against 150-mph drones, a Gepard is a fine shooter.

You're right, we're not sending the latest or greatest. Neither are the Russians ... though not out of choice on their part.

Same with Australia.
The RAN is well above the capability of the RCN. I ran a quick comparison via ChatGPT (so take it with bag of salt):

"Make me a comparison chart of the RCN vs the RAN"

FeatureRoyal Canadian Navy (RCN)Royal Australian Navy (RAN)
Founded19101913
HeadquartersOttawa, OntarioCanberra, Australian Capital Territory
Motto"Safer Seas, Stronger Canada""Integrity, Capability, Loyalty"
Fleet SizeApproximately 30 ships (as of 2023)Approximately 50 ships (as of 2023)
Submarines4 modern submarines (Victoria class)6 modern submarines (Collins class)
Surface Combatants12 Halifax-class frigates9 Anzac-class frigates, 3 Hobart-class destroyers
Support VesselsAuxiliary ships, replenishment shipsSupply ships, hydrographic vessels
Air ArmCH-148 Cyclone helicopters, fixed-wing supportMH-60R Seahawk, MRH-90 Taipan helicopters
Operational FocusArctic operations, anti-submarine warfareRegional security, humanitarian missions
International AlliancesNATO, Commonwealth, various coalitionsANZUS, Commonwealth, various coalitions
Major ExercisesRIMPAC, TRIDENT JUNCTURE, and othersRIMPAC, Talisman Sabre, and others
Current ChallengesAging fleet, modernization needsCapacity expansion, balancing regional threats

A quick eye will see that calling the Victoria class SSKs modern is a stretch, while the RAN is missing its Canberra-class LHDs. Damn Canada should have bought those Mistrals.

KYIV, Oct 1 (Reuters) - Russian troops have reached the centre of Vuhledar, a bastion on strategic high ground in eastern Ukraine that had resisted Russian assaults since Moscow's full-scale invasion, the regional governor of Ukraine's Donetsk region said on Tuesday.

Footage posted to social media showed Russian soldiers waving a flag from atop a bombed-out multi-storey building and unfurling another flag on a metal spire on a roof. Reuters determined the footage matched street patterns of Vuhledar.

[...]

Other images showed smoke rising over the ruins of the small mining town, a major battlefield where Ukrainian units had held off previous armoured Russian assaults throughout two and a half years of war.

"The enemy is already nearly in the centre of the city," regional governor Vadym Filashkin told Ukrainian TV, describing the situation as very difficult.

Vuhledar has strategic significance because of its high ground and its location near the junction of the two main fronts, in eastern and southern Ukraine. Russian forces reached the outskirts last week and intensified their offensive push in recent days.

I tried one that generated no interest at all.

DKDC. Don't know. Don't care.

This is disappointing. The list of Ukrainian cities, towns and villages that have fallen to Russia since Feb 2022 (and remain in Russian hands) continues to grow. Vuhledar is now added of the list. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Territorial_control_during_the_Russo-Ukrainian_War. I've highlighted all settlements with pre-war populations over 10,000.

With the exception of Bakhmut's capture in May 2023, most of Russia's gains in 2023 were small settlements. But 2024 has seen strong Russian gains (likely thanks to obstructionists in the US Congress), with already eleven settlements with pre-war 10k pop fallen, of course beginning with the Feb 2024 fall of Avdiivka. I can't help but feel that after Avdiivka's fall the AFU sort of lost its edge in the Donetsk Oblast, after which Zelenskyy decided to go into Russia.
