Washington's acting ambassador to Turtle Bay, Dorothy Shea, said the global body needed to enact "a simple, historic statement from the General Assembly that looks forward, not backwards. A resolution focused on one, simple idea: Ending the war. A path to peace is possible."


The US followed up the Ukrainian resolution with one of its own, calling for a "swift end to the conflict and … a lasting peace between Ukraine and the Russian Federation."


However, the US had to abstain from voting for its own resolution after a pair of amendments drafted by the EU were added to the measure.


The first amendment called for "reaffirming … the sovereignty, independence, unity and territorial integrity of Ukraine within its internationally recognized borders, extending to its territorial waters."


The second amendment replaced the US call for a "swift end" and "lasting peace" with a demand for a "just, lasting and comprehensive peace between Ukraine and the Russian Federation, in line with the Charter of the United Nations and the principles of sovereign equality and territorial integrity of States."

I'm pretty sure the UK, France, or Germany can build the large rockets mos' rickey-tick -- as well as the warheads. And if Europe is at stake, I think they'd share knowledge to accelerate that process.
 

Even more interesting is the motion America proposed and then abstained from voting for.

Amendments to the text were put forward by Russia and the European Union. Russia proposed adding the words "including by addressing its root causes" to the third paragraph (on a swift end to the conflict).

All the other NATO members voted for the motion with the amendments proposed by the EU that included clauses noting that "the full-scale invasion of Ukraine by the Russian Federation has persisted for three years and continues to have devastating and long-lasting consequences not only for Ukraine, but also for other regions and global stability."

It called for a commitment to "the sovereignty, independence, unity and territorial integrity of Ukraine within its internationally recognised borders" and the need to ensure accountability for crimes committed under international law, through "fair and independent investigations and prosecutions at national and international level".

The US version was adopted (93 in favour, eight against and 73 abstentions), but Member States also voted to add the European Union amendments with 60 in favour, 18 against and 81 abstentions.

The US voted against the amendments and abstained on its own resolution (the General Assembly failed to adopt the Russian amendment, with 31 in favour, 71 against and 59 abstentions).

This is the first second major diplomatic repudiation of the US (the first being the G7s refusal to allow Russia to be a member) and the first for its "peace" plans. This absention makes it absolutely clear that the US does not intend to allow for Ukrainian self determination or for the criminal prosecution of any Russians.

The statements from the UK and France, and the increased strength of the German pro Ukrainian government, show that more repudiation will follow.

There does seem to be a growing feeling that Europe is almost side-lining of the current US President. How he will react will be interesting. I have always believed that if Europe got its act together then they should be able to support Ukraine. UK, France, Belgium, Germany, Sweden and others all have a good military production background and if co-ordinated its difficult to see what we couldn't supply. If Trump does seem to have achieved, its forcing Europe to co-operate.


Please note that I didn't say America. My brother lives in Chicago. I have visited a number of times and have nothing but the highest respect for America and Americans.
