Their missiles have ranges of 300 miles or so. I imagine these bombers will be well behind the lines or out over the Black Sea, in either case kept out of range of SAMs.

There's no "f" in bingo, lol.
The Ukrainians haven't had much success interdicting these missile launchers themselves; they have so far had to intercept each missile due to air defenses.
Good luck getting F-16s a couple of hundred miles out over the Black Sea to engage with AAMs ... or close enough to the eastern border and still stay out of the S-400 envelope.

Well, the Iraqis sure as heck cringed when the bingo number came up "B52".
I'm being ever optimistic in this more recent event.
Edited to add that Ukraime has savaged the Russian AA capabilities in the Crimean region, so any Russian assets straying out in that area are certainly at risk.

This may be one of the small instances when the AIM-54's long range could actually be used in combat. When I was in the Navy we used to joke the only way those missiles would shoot down an enemy Aircraft was to pull back 100 miles after making a positive visual identification of the contact. I always considered them a great bit of untested technology but a great waste of tax payer dollars. The missiles were so expensive the navel aviators did not ever live fire them in training. Only in WW3 scenario would they ever be allowed to shoot at over visual range. And if that happens everybody has already lost.
But in this case Ukraine would probably be able to assume any targets approaching from that vector at that speed and altitude would be a hostile target. But that is with fingers crossed that it is not a Russian Civilian Transport.
