High pressure solenoid injectors on a single rail (pipe) giving smaller droplets of diesel as opposed to the older low pressure
seperate injectors. For example, our TDI 2 litre diesel Golf can do 4 litres per 100 km - about 58 miles per US gallon or 70 mpg
in imperial (highway at 110 km/h or 68 mph).

"Common Rail" refers to the engine's high-pressure fuel injection system.

The "rail" is similar to an old-school "fuel log" that fed multiple carbs on a street rod, except this rail system feeds solenoids that inject fuel directly into each cylinder.

That is what I believe makes diesel now so powerfull and economic.
