The Japanese did bomb the island on Dec 8, 1941. There was a small settlement there, Itascatown, which was basically a boys school.

I read that recently. Gotta laugh though - were that Japanese that intent on bombing "something?" Seem like a waste of a mission.

I think so! There were three or so of the islands in that area that had minimal people, all of them were either bombed, or shot at by submarines. Not real sporting to shoot at defenseless schoolboys.
