Just had some slightly alarming news though.
I got a shipping notification for the Koster turrets set, informing me it has been dispatched - but it showed the wrong address !!
I immediately sent an e-mail to Jeff, at Rare Plane Detective, and he got in touch with USPS straightaway, only to find that the package had already been collected and had entered the postal system. He tried to request a recall, but apparently this service is not available for international mail !

So now I have to try to reach a human at Royal Mail, and see if the package can be intercepted on arrival in the UK, and correctly addressed.
It might help that the name, town,, and county are shown correctly, but no street name, although the post code (zip code in the USA) is totally incorrect, although for the right county, it's not the right town..
 
Call the police:
Just say the package has 2 .50 cal on board to speed things up. Mention the load out carried back then like exposive tracer burner etc.
You know.. the traditionele fire crackers.

You will be in jail in a few hours but that piece will be safe an in your hands when you get out.
 
I have the address as shown on the package, the time of posting, and a tracking number. I eventually found a 'phone number to use to speak to someone at Royal Mail, but missed the opening times today, so I'll try tomorrow.
I'm fairly hopeful as the package has my name and town shown correctly, so should at least reach my local sorting office. With luck, I should get it eventually.

I'm currently fiddling with that spare wheel, and I think I'm going to change the mounting, and scratch build a side-swing mount, for a better fit.
I'll be back when I've made some progress.

The Re-fueller Tractor Unit, Part 2, continued .....................

I've now sorted a way to mount the spare wheel, simply by shortening the mounting arm, and adding a small mounting baseplate to the chassis, from plastic card.
I can't fit the wheel / arm yet, as it would obstruct things when fitting the cab / body unit, but a dry ft shows it should work out fine.

The cab has had a couple of coats of clear gloss, and set aside to harden, ready for decals, which I hope to get done by the weekend.

Meanwhile, the underside of the tank unit has been painted, along with the suspension units, steady bogies and pipework, and the body cleaned, ready for primer.
The Revell kit wheels have been assembled, painted and a dark wash applied to the hubs, and await some "dirt" on the tyres. The kit tyres are circumferential tread, whereas the real units had "bar" tread tyres, but, once in position, and partly masked by the tanker bodywork, they should look acceptable enough.
The Revell kit spare wheel and its cradle have also been painted. The wheel lacks a hub, having the tyre and rim only, so I'm guessing the real vehicle probably had split rims, but not a problem, as this part is mounted beneath the tanker body, and will only be visible from one side.

The Re-fueller Tractor Unit, Part 2, continued ...............

The decals have now been applied to the cab / body, and it's now ready for a clear matt coat.
Although there were "standard" sizes for vehicle markings, I noticed after studying a number of wartime photos that this wasn't always adhered to, and a number of variations in size and positioning can be seen, as well as differences in the "quality" of application, particularly of the I.D. markings on the front bumper.

The Tamiya kit decals were used for the stars on the doors, and for the "USA" on each side of the bonnet (hood), and I had thought of using the kit decals for the serial numbers on the side of the hood, with the sequence re-arranged just to be different from the kit. However, all photos of tractor units showed a different number format, preceded by a letter "W", so these were made up with individual character decals from the Railtec Transfers sheets, as were the Unit I.D. (453rd Bomb Group), and the Divisional I.D. (2nd Air Division).
Rather than use the Tamiya kit's relatively large circled star for the hood, a slightly smaller version from Rubicon Models was substituted, with the very small star on the front bumper also from this source. These are from a sheet of 1/56th scale decals, designed for table-top wargaming vehicles, and I also have a sheet of their vehicle numbers / codes, which will be useful later.

I was slightly concerned that I might not have black number decals suitable for the Bridging plate, but I found some on an "Xtradecal" 1/72nd scale RAF letters and numbers sheet.
These were a bit of a b*gg*r to apply, align, and set, as they are only 1 mm tall !!

If I can get the primer sprayed onto the tanker trailer later tonight, I might be able to spray the Olive Drab sometime tomorrow, and hopefully get the decals on over the weekend.
Meanwhile, the pics show how the cab section and front bumper look so far .............


 
I managed to speak to someone at Royal Mail, regarding the (Koster turrets kit) package, in transit from the USA, but wrongly addressed.
Apparently, as there is no house / building number shown in the address, the package will be automatically returned to the sender, on the next available flight from London, Heathrow, as soon as it's cleared the "system" (return packages are not held or stored, so this could be returned the same day, depending on time of arrival).
I've e-mailed Jeff at Rare-Plane Detective, and informed him that he should receive it around mid to late January, possibly a little later (it hasn't yet arrived in the UK), and asked him to re-send it.
Hopefully it'll arrive here eventually - fingers crossed !!

I haven't sprayed the primer on the tanker unit yet - getting a bit stiff and eyes are tiring, and certainly don't want to overstrain the "new" eye!
All being well, I should get it done tomorrow though.
