I was at Ypress last week ( pictures will follow soon). All those battles there, the hundreds of thousands of dead for a mere few kilometres. Especially the 3rd battle around Passendale when the British generals were not even bothered to take a look at the muck they sent the troops to fight in. It made me wonder. WWI is well known for it's massive battles going on and on, way after the momentum was lost and with results incomparable with the costs.
So what battle do you think was the most pointless? The Somme? Passendale? The Dardanelles, Verdun? Any other?

Wow, there were a number of battles that fit the description all a testament to the futility of man at war. Very sad indeed. How about the first and second battles of the Marne? The first battle with over a half million dead blunted the German advance and doomed Europe to the stalemate of the next 4 years. The second ushered in the US and really put Germany on its death knell. Or final nail if you will.

My Grandfather fought in a few of the notable battles, including Ypres, before being wounded and sent home.
